Inspirations: Golden Ratio, Phi, Fibonacci

Prevalent in the major works of Leonardo Da Vinci and underlying many of his design compositions, is the phi relationship (also known as the Golden Ratio or the Golden Mean), a ratio of approximately 1:1.618, found in nature and creation, and inherent in the Fibonacci sequence. The Golden Rectangle, the Golden Triangle, and the Golden Pyramid, all based on the Golden Ratio are all appear prominent in the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. He referred to the Golden Ratio as the "divine proportion".

Mona Lisa - Da Vinci's Use of Sacred Geometry

Art Education: Learn how to analyze Da Vinci's famous painting. Evidence that Da Vinci used Sacred Geometry (specifically, the ancient geometry used in the planning and construction of religious structures as well as for sacred spaces) to lay out his painting BEFORE he started to paint in order to align his model while using a camera obscura or camera lucida as suggested by David Hockney. In addition, author, artist, architect...polymath Leon Alberti described methods for achieving accuracy in drawing complex shapes by using a wire grid window and other methods in his book Della Pittura in 1435. Also, Da Vinci did the geometric drawings for De divina proportione (by mathematician Luca Paccioli) that provides a geometric analysis of the human face (see Wikipedia article). It is interesting to note that the pentagon is associated with the number phi, so is the positioning in the painting Mona Lisa. This number phi is also known as the perfect or golden ratio aka. 1.61803399. The golden ratio is the believed to be beautiful as it is seen many places in nature along with the Fibonacci numbers (contributed by kontaktseistrup). This animated geometric analysis of the Mona Lisa based upon a modification of the original analysis done by Robert diCurcio. As a primer for those witha serious interest, I recommend "A Night of Numbers - Phi's The Limit" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD-ZiqDvnKo&feature=plcp, "Sacred Geometry: Philosophy and Practice" by Robert Lawlor, ISBN-10: 0500810303. Zoom to 200% and hold down the Alt key to "fine tune" the placements. Music is "Her Touch" available through footgagefirm.com. For thorough review of Sacred Geometry in art visit the CGImaging channel on YouTube. He has some great tutorials. Also, after getting getting comments that included extreme expletives, racial, ethnic, and religious slurs, etc. I chose comments pending. As an example, the most recent episode was from a Neo-Nazi whose channel advocated rape of black women (in his background artwork). In addition, stats indicate that between 10 and 20% of viewers are between 13 and 17. However, I do welcome real debates. see below

PhiMatrix 1.618 Software Demo

PhiMatrix™ software is a transparent grid for Windows and Mac that overlays any other software you are using. It's designed to unveil the phi proportions that can be found throughout life and the universe, from the dimensions of DNA, sea shells, plants, animals and the human body to its appearance in the stock market.

The phi relationship, 1.618:1, known as the Golden Section (also mean, proportion or ratio) and the Divine proportion, has long been used by artists, architects, designers, engineers, musicians, photographers, sculptors, surgeons and stock analysts alike to achieve excellence in their results.

The Greeks used it in designing the Parthenon. Leonardo Da Vinci used it in creating "The Last Supper" and many of his other paintings. Now you can use it too, to analyze and better appreciate what already exists or to create and design your own masterpieces in the same proportions that give nature its beauty, harmony and balance.

The applications are limited only by your creativity: Product design, graphic arts layout, fashion design, interior design, architecture, art, sculpture, photo composition and cropping, stock market analysis, beauty analysis, educating students on design in nature, and much, much more.
